Clarkson College to Jointly Host Heartland Interprofessional Education (HIPE) Conference

Clarkson College is jointly hosting the 4^th annual Heartland Interprofessional Education (HIPE) virtual conference on July 21–22, 2022. The event is a collaborative undertaking with Creighton University, University of Nebraska Medical Center and Des Moines University, and this year’s event is the largest and most comprehensive conference since its creation, bringing together speakers from 34 institutions across 17 states.

The theme, Elevating IPE: Bridging Clinical and Community brings together health care and community professionals, educators and students to share knowledge and build skills to improve patient and client outcomes. The conference will highlight trends in interprofessional education and collaborative practice, facilitate participants' knowledge and skill set acquisition, and affirm attitudes focused on improving outcomes for clients, patients, health care and community professionals, and populations.

“The HIPE conference is a wonderful opportunity to hear from national leaders in the field, to learn about the work being done by IPE colleagues across the country, and to share your own work with others,” says Devin Nickol, MD, Professor, Associate Dean for Interprofessional Education at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. “It remains a great value, even more so as it continues to grow in scope and attendance each year.”

Sarah Flanagan, MSW, MPA, LCSW, Associate Professor, Director of Community Health and Interprofessional Education at Clarkson College, and chair of this year’s HIPE Conference planning committee, agrees. “This year’s event reflects the evolving IPE landscape and we wanted to invite more people to the conversation. We are proud to welcome presenters and attendees from across the country to exchange ideas and learn from one another. Interprofessional education and practice benefit from conferences such as these when students, educators, health care and community professionals all learn from one another in order to adapt and evolve to meet patient and client needs.”

A panel presentation, “A Humble Reflection on Present Challenges, Impending Changes, and Future Possibilities” will kick off the conference. Speakers include Liz Skilton, Ph.D., Associate Professor of History, Director of Public History at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Scott Shipman, MD, MPH, Director of Clinical Innovations and Director of Primary Care at the Association of American Medical Colleges and Assistant Professor, Dartmouth College, Jeanne Churchill, DNP, CPNP-PC, Assistant Professor of Nursing at Columbia University, and Shelley Cohen Konrad, Ph.D., LCSW, FNAP, Director, Center for Excellence in Collaborative Education at the University of New England.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to hear from keynote speaker Rachel Mindrup, MFA, the Richard L. Deming M.D. Endowed Chair in Medical Humanities at Creighton University, who will be presenting “Painting Beyond the Diagnosis: How I Use the Visual Arts to Initiate Conversations” and sharing her individual perspective on how the medical humanities can support medical education and health profession practice. Panelist Shelley Cohen Konrad returns for the closing keynote “Re-envisioning ‘About, From, and With’: Thoughts about the Future of Interprofessional Health Education & Practice”.
